A frenectomy and a frenulotomy are similar procedures that release tongue and lip ties. These procedures benefit infants and their mothers by improving breastfeeding. In short, a frenectomy releases the frenulum to correct tongue and lip movement, and tends to be slightly more extensive. A frenulotomy requires a smaller release than a frenectomy and also releases the frenulum. Tongue and lip ties are very similar. A lip tie is when the frenulum — the tissue connecting the upper lip to the gums — is too short or tight.
