The laser offers a no-contact approach which reduces trauma to the area and provides a comfortable experience for your child. Traditionally, frenectomies and frenulotomies have been painful and required a long recovery. The Solea has changed the game in so many ways and our parents have been thrilled with every successful procedure at Band & Wire.

What is a frenectomy? What is a frenulotomy?

A frenectomy and a frenulotomy are similar procedures that release tongue and lip ties. These procedures benefit infants and their mothers by improving breastfeeding. Other benefits for older children include proper speech development, comfortable eating, and reduced risk of other oral health problems. In short, a frenectomy releases the frenulum to correct tongue and lip movement, and tends to be slightly more extensive. A frenulotomy requires a smaller release than a frenectomy and also releases the frenulum. The choice comes down to what is necessary for your child after consulting with your pediatric laser dentist.

What are Tongue and Lip Ties?

Tongue and lip ties are very similar. A lip tie is when the frenulum — the tissue connecting the upper lip to the gums — is too short or tight. Similarly to a lip tie, a tongue tie is when the frenulum linguae — the tissue connecting the tongue to the floor of the mouth — is too short or tight which restricts movement. Both cause trouble eating, sleeping and speaking. As infants, this causes issues with breastfeeding making it difficult to latch which can cause pain to the mother and low milk flow to the infant. Other symptoms include slow weight gain, colic symptoms, drooling, gagging or vomiting since movement is so restricted.
