Got a new space maintainer? Here's what you need to know

Diet: We recommend a soft diet today. The cement used to hold the spacer in place takes 12 hours to achieve its final set. After today your child can resume a normal diet, however, space maintainers may come off if your child eats sticky foods such as candies, chewing gum, fruit snacks, etc. Please avoid these foods while your child has a space maintainer.

Oral Hygiene: slight bleeding around the space maintainer today may occur and the gum tissue around the space maintainer may be red,  or irritated for several days. Brush the area gently today and resume normal brushing and flossing tomorrow. If the gums around the crown are irritated, have your child rinse with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt with one cup of water) after eating.

Watch For: If the space maintainer comes off, please contact our orthodontic practice in Hinsdale, and keep the space maintainer in a safe place until your visit to recement the spacer.
